A chat for the whole family.
Rules for each child's age.
Add each child with their year of birth. The chat follows rules for their age, and you can read their conversations.
Family
Unlimited messages under fair use, one reply at a time for each person, attachments, and web search up to 20 times a day for each person.
What you get
- Family
- $35 a month for up to 5 people, you included. Unlimited messages under fair use, one reply at a time for each person, attachments, and web search up to 20 times a day for each person.
- Free for the workspace
- A new account starts on Free: 30 messages a day, 1 reply at a time, no attachments. Everyone in the workspace shares the 30 messages. Sign-up asks for a card, which is not charged.
- More on a Sail plan
- Sail, Sail Pro and Sail Max include the chat with no message cap, more than one reply at a time, and attachments of up to 10 MB a file and 5 a message. Plans start at $49 a month.
- Where it runs
- Chat conversations are stored in the account database, in Australia. Each message is processed in the first live region your workspace allows.
- What the chat stores
- If you use the chat in your account, we store each conversation: its title, the messages you send, the replies, and the files you attach. For a PDF or a text file we also store the text read out of it. The chat deletes messages after 7 days, or the time you choose in Settings.
What can go wrong, and what the chat does
Each member you add as a child is answered by rules for their age, and the rows below say what those rules and checks do.
- Replies not suited to their age
- Every message from a child goes to the model with rules for their age. The rules forbid sexual content and graphic violence, and any instructions for drugs, weapons or self-harm. A short list of clear words and phrases, such as asking for nudes or how to make a bomb, is refused before the model sees the message. Under 13, files are off and the chat does not open web pages. Web search stays on for every age, and the same rules cover what it finds.
- Conversations used to train a model
- A conversation is not used to train a model. The chat deletes messages after 7 days, or the time you choose in Settings.
- No way to see what was said
- You and each parent you add can read every conversation of each child under 18, under Children in your account. Parents can only read them. The child sees "Your parents can see your chats." in the chat.
- A child in crisis
- When a child writes about self-harm, suicide, abuse or being in danger in words the screen knows, the message is not stored or sent to the model. The chat answers with care and points them to a trusted adult, Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 988 in the United States, and 000 or 911. Each parent is emailed the child's address, the kind of message and the time, never the message, at most once a day for each kind.
- Strangers and personal details
- The rules tell the model never to ask a child for their name, address, school, phone number, photos or passwords, to tell them not to share them, and to send them to a trusted adult if someone they met online asks to meet or talk privately.
Setting up
- 01Create your account
Sign up with your email address and add a card. The card is not charged. As the workspace's owner you are a parent.
- 02Add each person
In Settings, under Members, choose Add a person and say whether they are an adult, a parent or a child. For a child, enter their year of birth: it sets their age band and is not stored. Each person gets an email with a link to join, and nobody you add is asked for a card.
- 03Put the chat on their phone
On an iPhone or iPad, open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open the browser's menu and tap Install app. The invite email says the same.
What the chat does not do
- No filter is perfect
- The screen is a short list of words and phrases, so a message worded another way reaches the model, and a model can get its rules wrong. Read their chats now and then, and talk with them about what they use it for.
- No time limits
- There is no time limit and there are no quiet hours. On Free the 30 messages a day are shared by the whole workspace, not set per person.
- Deleting and sharing
- A child cannot delete a conversation or make a share link to one. You and each parent you add can delete a child's conversation under Children, and it is then gone for them too.
- Alerts only for what the screen catches
- A parent is emailed only when the screen catches a message about self-harm, abuse or danger. A message it misses sends no email, though the rules still tell the model to point the child to help.
- Helplines for two countries
- The chat names Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 and 000 for Australia, and 911 and 988 in the United States. Elsewhere it tells a child to call a helpline where they live or their local emergency number.
- Ages do not update
- A year of birth leaves a year of doubt, so a child is placed in the younger band. The band stays as it was set: use Set age in Settings as they grow.
Questions
- Does each person need an email address?
- Yes. Each person signs in with a code sent to their own address, and the invite email has their link to join.
- Can my child change their age or leave?
- No. Only the owner adds people, removes them and sets a member's age. A member under 18 cannot open Keys, Billing or the list of members.
- Can another adult read the children's chats?
- Only if you add them as a parent. A chat conversation is shown only to the member who started it, and to anyone that member gives a share link. The conversations of a member under 18 are also shown to the workspace's parents: the owner and each adult added as a parent. Children in the privacy policy
- What does the crisis email say?
- If a member under 18 sends a message the chat's filter treats as a crisis (self-harm, abuse or danger), the workspace's parents (its owner and each adult added as a parent) are emailed the member's address, the kind of message and the time, never the message. We keep a record of each alert: the member, the kind and the day.
- What happens if I remove a child?
- Their conversations in the workspace are deleted with them.
- Is there a guide for parents?
- Yes. Families in the docs says how to add each person, what a child can and cannot do, and what removing one deletes. Families in the docs
- What do Chat and Family include?
- Chat is for one person and Family for up to 5 people in the workspace, you included. Unlimited messages under fair use, one reply at a time for each person, attachments, and web search up to 20 times a day for each person. Messages are unlimited under the terms' fair use clause. Fair use in the terms
- What does Free include?
- 30 messages a day, 1 reply at a time, no attachments. A reply reads up to 32,000 tokens of the conversation, dropping the oldest messages first. Sign-up asks for a card, which is not charged.
- What happens at the cap?
- Messages open again at 00:00 UTC. Chat and Family have no message cap, from $20 a month.
- Are conversations used to train a model?
- No. Prompts and outputs of requests made with an API key are not stored. The chat in your account stores your conversations until you delete them, and deletes messages older than 7 days unless you choose another time under Keep chats in Settings. Neither is used to train a model.
- How do I delete a conversation?
- Deleting a conversation in the chat removes its messages, replies and share link at once. Its attached files are removed from storage by a job that runs every hour, and database backups hold a deleted conversation or message for up to 7 days. Privacy policy
