Families
A workspace can hold a family: adults, parents and children. Each child uses the chat with rules for their age, and every parent can read their conversations. What the chat says to a child, and what it does not do, is also on the page for parents.
Plans
- Family. $35 a month for up to 5 people, you included. Unlimited messages under fair use, one reply at a time for each person, attachments, and web search up to 20 times a day for each person.
- Free for the workspace. A new account starts on Free: 30 messages a day, 1 reply at a time, no attachments. Everyone in the workspace shares the 30 messages. Sign-up asks for a card, which is not charged.
Add a parent or a child
- 01Create your account
Sign up with your email address and add a card. The card is not charged. As the workspace's owner you are a parent.
- 02Add each person
In Settings, under Members, choose Add a person and say whether they are an adult, a parent or a child. For a child, enter their year of birth: it sets their age band and is not stored. Each person gets an email with a link to join, and nobody you add is asked for a card.
- 03Put the chat on their phone
On an iPhone or iPad, open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open the browser's menu and tap Install app. The invite email says the same.
People are added in Settings, under Members. A child's year of birth places them in one of three bands: Under 13, 13 to 15 or 16 to 17. An adult or a parent is added with no age, and a parent can read the chats of every child under 18.
No. Only the owner adds people, removes them and sets a member's age. A member under 18 cannot open Keys, Billing or the list of members.
What the age rules do
- Replies not suited to their age. Every message from a child goes to the model with rules for their age. The rules forbid sexual content and graphic violence, and any instructions for drugs, weapons or self-harm. A short list of clear words and phrases, such as asking for nudes or how to make a bomb, is refused before the model sees the message. Under 13, files are off and the chat does not open web pages. Web search stays on for every age, and the same rules cover what it finds.
- Strangers and personal details. The rules tell the model never to ask a child for their name, address, school, phone number, photos or passwords, to tell them not to share them, and to send them to a trusted adult if someone they met online asks to meet or talk privately.
Reading a child's chats
You and each parent you add can read every conversation of each child under 18, under Children in your account. Parents can only read them. The child sees "Your parents can see your chats." in the chat. Open Children to read them.
Only if you add them as a parent. A chat conversation is shown only to the member who started it, and to anyone that member gives a share link. The conversations of a member under 18 are also shown to the workspace's parents: the owner and each adult added as a parent.
Crisis alerts
When a child writes about self-harm, suicide, abuse or being in danger in words the screen knows, the message is not stored or sent to the model. The chat answers with care and points them to a trusted adult, Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 988 in the United States, and 000 or 911. Each parent is emailed the child's address, the kind of message and the time, never the message, at most once a day for each kind.
If a member under 18 sends a message the chat's filter treats as a crisis (self-harm, abuse or danger), the workspace's parents (its owner and each adult added as a parent) are emailed the member's address, the kind of message and the time, never the message. We keep a record of each alert: the member, the kind and the day.
What a child cannot do
A member under 18 cannot open Keys, Billing or the list of members, and holds no API key in the workspace: setting a member's age under 18 revokes any key they made there.
A member under 18 cannot make a share link or delete a conversation, and the Keep chats setting does not apply to them: their conversations are kept until a parent deletes one, or until they are removed from the workspace or it is deleted.
Removing a child
The owner removes a person in Settings, under Members. Removing a member deletes their conversations at once. It does not delete their email address or the record of their crisis alerts. To have those deleted, or to raise a concern about a child's use of the chat, email hello@safeailabs.ai.
Limits
- No filter is perfect. The screen is a short list of words and phrases, so a message worded another way reaches the model, and a model can get its rules wrong. Read their chats now and then, and talk with them about what they use it for.
- No time limits. There is no time limit and there are no quiet hours. On Free the 30 messages a day are shared by the whole workspace, not set per person.
- Alerts only for what the screen catches. A parent is emailed only when the screen catches a message about self-harm, abuse or danger. A message it misses sends no email, though the rules still tell the model to point the child to help.
- Helplines for two countries. The chat names Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 and 000 for Australia, and 911 and 988 in the United States. Elsewhere it tells a child to call a helpline where they live or their local emergency number.
- Ages do not update. A year of birth leaves a year of doubt, so a child is placed in the younger band. The band stays as it was set: use Set age in Settings as they grow.
